Dentist ‘honoured’ to win composer medal
Ryan Howells was awarded the composer medal at the 2017 Urdd National Eisteddfod.
The 24-year-old dentist, originally from Camrose, Pembrokeshire said the winning piece made use of Welsh hymns in a unique way, within a score which skilfully combined fast and more leisurely paced sections.
Musician Einion Dafydd, who adjudicated the competition, said: “There was something special about all the pieces in the competition, but the top two pieces were more accomplished, showing technical skills, confidence and the ability to take the listener on a journey.
“It was interesting that many of the competitors had woven familiar melodies into their compositions, including Ryan’s work, which fully deserved the prize.”
Discussing his big win, Ryan said: “It’s a great honour.
“This is been my greatest achievement so far as a composer.”
Elan Richards, from Carmarthenshire, came second in the competition and Gwydion Rhys, from Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, came third.
Elsewhere a student from Blaenavon walked away with the art medal.
Alex Skyrme, who is currently studying her A-levels at Ysgol Gwynllyw, was awarded the prize.
The young artist created a 3D piece based on the theme of female oppression.
It centred around the idea that people, and, the media especially, puts women in boxes.
Alex used various forms of media to create the piece including wire, wax, cardboard boxes and wood.
Ales said: “Although I have an interest in information technology, once I started on my GCSE art course I knew I had made the correct decision
