Watch out for Ross in hunt for Test spot – Byrne

Kessinger tattoed on one of his biceps, had shown he was made of the right stuff.

That’s the line that says: “Do just the best you can, be proud of yourself, but, remember, there is no indispensable man.”

Moriarty’s father Paul passed it on to him, after he himself had been given it before his first Wales cap by his own dad.

It helps Moriarty junior to stay grounded, though he doesn’t seem the type to believe in his own publicity, anyway.

“Not many people have been talking about him since the squad announcement,” said Byrne.

“But Gatland is big on attitude and he would have seen on the tour to New Zealand last summer there are no problems with Ross on that score. “I thought he had a great trip. “It’s an understatement to say it’s a difficult place to tour, but he really fronted up and justified the decision to take him in the first place.

“Given a chance out there this summer, he has it in him to take it.”

Gatland has picked Liam Williams as a wing, but the belief that he is more effective at full-back refuses to go away and Byrne reckons that is where the Lions should use him in the Tests.

“He doesn’t have the same impact when he’s playing on the wing,” said Byrne. “I see him as a full-back. “He is an outstanding counterattacker and he is as brave as they come under the high ball.

“Leigh Halfpenny is sound in defence and Stuart Hogg is a really good attacker, but, for me, Liam is a mixture of them. He has many of Halfpenny’s qualities and many of Hogg’s as well.”
