Old chicken coop transformed into a stunning modern home
A TUMBLEDOWN chicken coop has scooped a top architecture prize – after being transformed into a stylish home.
The abandoned hen-house in Monmouthshire was given a makeover for a poultry £275,000 into a modern fourbedroom bungalow.
Owner Sue Peacock saw the shed’s potential because of the stunning views of the Black Mountains.
The ramshackle wooden barn abandoned for decades has been given a new wing to be converted into a luxury holiday property for anyone wanting to pay £175 a night.
The rural holiday home in Trellech, near Monmouth, features floor to ceiling glass walls, allowing light to spill into the plush interior which can accommodate up to eight people.
It has now won a special award from the Royal Society of Architects in Wales – and is described as “very simple and elegant”.
An RSAW spokesman said: “It’s a small project, but with a generous and uplifting ethos.
“A place to enjoy. The jury left with a smile on their faces.”
A spokesman for architects Hall and Bednarczyk said: “The former poultry barn was abandoned for several decades and in a rundown state.
“We demonstrated how its utilitarian agricultural identity could be retained in a convincing and contemporary architectural form.”
The Chepstow-based architects said: “The roof and flanking walls employ black corrugated sheeting and timber cladding in a refined and affectionate re-working of typical agricultural materials.
“Polished concrete floors and boarded timber walls provide a sophisticated nod to the building’s humble origins.”
