Young farmers offered a comprehensive introduction to pig-keeping skills
AN INITIATIVE to encourage the next generation of pig-keepers has been launched.
Following the success of Wales YFC’s initiatives such as their lamb and beef schemes, pigs are next on the agenda for the voluntary rural youth organisation.
It is a joint venture between Wales YFC and Menter Moch Cymru, the new RDP-funded project that aims to develop the pig sector in Wales.
The application window has now opened. Fur finalists will be selected and provided with five weaners each. Contestants will also get an opportunity to take part in an exclusive carcase competition later in the year.
Support and training will be provided to develop the skills required to establish, manage and develop this new venture, from practical advice on rearing to business skills such as marketing.
“Menter Moch Cymru is delighted to be working with Wales YFC to provide this unique opportunity,” said Melanie Cargill, Menter Moch Cymru project manager. This is a great introduction for any young farmer thinking of entering the pig sector. Not only are they provided with the weaners to start them off, but they are also given training and support throughout the whole process.”
Pigs can be kept in various management systems, indoor and outdoor. Many farms already have suitable general purpose buildings or lands that are currently under-used that could be easily converted for pig-keeping with little capital investment, providing an alternative income and enterprise on farm.
Wales YFC chairman Arwel Jones said: “The project provides a great opportunity for young farmers to get their foot on the industry ladder and to be involved with the development of the pig sector in Wales.
“We encourage members from throughout the country to consider this new opportunity and to get in touch for more information.”
Closing date for entries is June 16.
