Former Welsh Government Permanent Secretary Sir Derek Jones has a new role as chairman of the advisory council to the Prince’s Trust Cymru youth charity.

Sir Derek stood down as Permanent Secretary earlier this year. In that role he oversaw 5,000 civil servants and was personally responsible for the Welsh Government’s £15bn budget as principal accounting officer.

The advisory council provides support to the Prince’s Trust Cymru to help it achieve strategic plans. Other new council members are: Ian Price, director of CBI Wales Alwen Williams, director of BT in Wales

Matt Jukes, deputy chief constable of South Wales Police

Sasha Davies, head of strategic development for Horizon Nuclear Power

Richard Selby, director of Pro Steel.

Wayne Harvey, senior partner in Wales for Deloitte

Steffan Williams, group managing director of Newgate Communications.

Sir Derek said: “The Prince’s Trust Cymru supports thousands of young people in Wales who have had a difficult start in life to access to new opportunities, of which there are many.

“I have already met some of the young people supported by the Trust and I’ve been really impressed by their motivation and aspiration.

“It’s crucial that we harness that enthusiasm and provide the tools these young people need to achieve success, benefiting the economy and society in Wales.”

Chris Jones, director of the Prince’s Trust Cymru, said: “The trust supports thousands of young people in Wales who have had a difficult start in life to access to new opportunities, of which there are many.

“I have already met some of the young people supported by The Trust, and I’ve been really impressed by their motivation and aspiration.

“It’s crucial that we harness that enthusiasm and provide the tools these young people need to achieve success, benefiting the economy and society in Wales.”

Existing members of the Trust’s council include Chris Jones, chief executive of Welsh Water, and Jemma Terry, managing partner of the Cardiff Berndston.

The Prince’s Trust Cymru helps unemployed young people get their lives on track. Many of the young people helped by the Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or have been in trouble with the law. The Trust’s programmes give these vulnerable office of Odgers young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop selfesteem and skills for work. Three in four young people supported by the Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training.

In the past decade, the charity has returned £102m to society through its work supporting disadvantaged young people in Wales.
