Plaid Cymru leader LeanneWood claims

between Mrs May and Jeremy Corbyn was a choice in which “Wales can literally never win”.

“People are being asked to vote for Labour candidates who have described their leader, and I quote, as a ‘lunatic’ and a host of other unflattering descriptions,” she said.

“People are being asked to vote for Welsh Labour which a month ago was keen to distance itself away from the rest of the party.

“Wales does not decide UK election results.

“Voting Labour time and time again cannot stop Tory governments from being formed.”

Ms Wood called on voters to reject the “arrogance” and not to “let Labour con you into believing” that a vote for Plaid Cymru would be a wasted vote.

She added: “Even if there isn’t a hung parliament, Plaid Cymru MPs are essential to protect and promote the Welsh national interest.

“But if Theresa May’s disastrous campaign does result in no party winning a majority, then Plaid Cymru will have a chance to make Wales matter.”

Ms Wood urged supporters to “mobilise” over the next two days and share and promote the party’s policies and message.

Plaid activists present at the speech were going to campaign on the streets and knock on doors afterwards.

Treorchy forms part of the Rhondda constituency which Ms Wood represents in the National Assembly and which the party had targeted as a winnable seat in today’s poll.

Local company director and television producer Branwen Cennard is the Plaid Cymru candidate for the area.

Ms Wood, who ended her speech by saying “let’s go knock on doors”, added: “Don’t let Wales be forgotten by Westminster parties.

“A vote for Plaid Cymru is a vote to defend Wales, to defend our communities from the Conservative Party’s austerity agenda, to defend our public services from being cut even further and it is a vote to ensure that Wales’ voice is represented as we renegotiate our relationship with the European Union.”
