Police arrest suspect after two armed robberies
Aman has been arrested on suspicion of committing two armed robberies in Newport, police have confirmed.
Gwent Police said a team of armed officers descended on a street in the Malpas Road area of the city yesterday morning.
A spokesman said the police siege was in connection with two robberies at stores on the road.
A 25-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of committing the robberies and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.
Police said shop staff at convenience stores on Malpas Road and Albany Street were threatened on Wednesday morning.
In both incidents a man demanded money and there were minor altercations with the staff, a spokesman said.
Two staff members in each store received minor injuries, but no money was taken.
A phone and bank card were stolen from someone in the Albany Street store.
Officers later confirmed that both robberies were believed to be carried out by the same man.
At approximately 8.15am he is said to have entered a convenience store on Malpas Road then at 8.21am a convenience store on Albany Street.
Chief Superintendent Marc Budden said: “Our priority during this incident was keep members of the public safe.
“Officers responded quickly and efficiently to contain the male involved and to ensure there was little risk to the local community.
“I’d like thank the public for their ongoing support and patience while our officers undertake their inquiries.”
A cordon was put in place around the property, but it was later reduced on Wednesday afternoon.
One woman, who works at a shop nearby, explained what it was like to witness the incident.
Sue Wakeham, who works at Hairs & Graces on Malpas Road, said there was police activity right outside the salon during the morning.
Sue said: “There was an ambulance this morning when I came to work.
“I’ve only seen the ambulance, another police car and a police van.”
Fire officers and representatives from Welsh Ambulance Service were also at the scene.
