Waste lorries used as part of city blockade
CARDIFF council bin lorries were hired as road blocks as part of the “unprecedented” security operation for the Champions League final.
The security operation for the final between Real Madrid and Juventus saw a “ring of steel” erected around the Principality Stadium for last weekend’s final. It was held less than a fortnight after the Manchester suicide bombing that killed 22 people.
It emerged yesterday that waste lorries were used as part of the city centre blockade.
It came as residents in parts of the city continued to complain their waste had not been collected following the disruption to services during the Champions League final weekend.
When South Wales Police was asked about the use of council bin lorries, a spokesman said: “South Wales Police hired a wide range of equipment from a number of suppliers for use throughout the period covered by the Champions League Finals.”
Since Saturday’s final, hundreds of residents have faced huge delays to their bin collections.
When asked to comment about the delays, a council spokesman said: “Unfortunately, road closures in the city centre and increased security measures for the Champions League final have had an impact on our household recycling and waste collections this week, for which we apologise.
“The vast majority of the delays will have been completed by Thursday.
“Our teams are working hard to collect the waste.”
