Sinful waste of city’s stunning buildings
AS a member of the public I have only just become aware of the situation with regard to the Custom House, as published in the Western Mail and the Echo. I am horrified to read about the destruction of this beautiful building.
I really don’t know why Cardiff Council is trying to get rid of our heritage in favour of buildings that don’t stand the test of time.
St David’s Hotel, for example, looks so shabby.
I find it amazing that it takes a Liverpool man to have the determination to sort out one of our capital’s most iconic buildings. The Exchange, which undoubtedly would have been lost, while Welsh developers are after a quick buck.
“Wharf” destroyed, Cory’s Building left to rot, as many other stunning buildings in Cardiff Bay.
Custom House, Penarth Marina, derelict. Two fine houses just off Penarth front, Ashdene Manor and Normandy in total disarray, developers waiting for them to fall down so another carbuncle can be built.
Other European cities seem to be so proud of their heritage and we all like to visit and be in awe of the architecture, so why does Cardiff seem hell bent on smashing ours?
Perhaps we should take a leaf out of Dublin’s book, where they have embraced their old buildings and developed new uses for them.
They have an Antique Quarter, the Medieval Quarter, the Georgian Quarter and the Tech Quarter
We have the Shambles. A mishmash of random buildings with no coherence.
Let’s have a Drama Quarter, The TV Quarter, The Fashion Quarter, etc.
Make Cardiff a real destination instead of a place full of tacky buildings
Yes, we need hotels, but what’s wrong with all the brown sites?
What next for demolition, City
Hall? Cadw would probably support that. Jennifer Robinson Rhiwbina, Cardiff
