Authentic Bavarian celebration inWales

-

AN Oktoberfest event is coming to Newport this year and organisers are looking to bring the most authentic Bavarian celebration to the city.

The popular folk festival, which includes many Bavarian traditions, incorporates all manner of festivities including games, music, entertainment, food and, of course, good beer .

You can expect to see barrels of authentic German “bier” being poured out into steins along with traditional German and Bavarian cuisine, such as würstl, sauerkraut, pretzel, spätzle and schnitzel among others.

The festival is being held over a few days at Newport’s Tredegar Park. There will be three sessions over two days, held over Friday and Saturday, October 13-14. Firstly there’s a Friday evening session, which runs from 6-11pm, while Saturday has two time slots, running from noon-5pm and then again from 6-11pm.

So what to expect? Traditionally celebrated at the end of September and start of October, Oktoberfest is a highlight in the German calendar and brings people together for a few days of song, dance, and of course food and drink.

At the Tredegar Park event you can expect all of that, plus an authentic Oompah band - a Bavarian-style musical outfit - all taking place inside one of Europe’s largest touring bier tents. According to the organisers, the event’s Bierhalle will be stocked with traditional cuisine to showcase the best Germany has to offer.

There’ll be a selection including würstl, schnitzel, pretzel, schweinshaxe, sauerkraut, spätzle, schweinebraten, steckerlfisch, knödel and käsespätzle along with a few others, so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

And as for drinks, you can expect to find steins and steins of authentic German beer, coming from one of the country’s best breweries.

Unfortunately this event is adults only, so nobody under the age of 18 can go.

They’ll also be running a challenge 25 policy - so if you’re lucky enough to look younger, be prepared to show off your ID.

Tickets for the event aren’t on sale just yet, but you can register for pre-sale ticket discounts, by visiting the Oktoberfest website at www. oktoberfestofficial.com/newport
