To reconsider a softer Brexit option

economy. But the electorate has never voted for that and I believe the Conservative Party’s poor performance at the election proves that people don’t want it.

“The Welsh Government will be ready to work with whoever is in government at Westminster to ensure that Wales and the UK gets the best deal from our present EU partners and future neighbours. We want to be at that negotiating table and believe we have a great deal to offer.

“It’s vital that we protect Welsh jobs that could be lost if there is a hard Brexit.”

Mr Drakeford said Theresa May had been exposed as someone who was prepared to change her position when she thought it was in her and her party’s advantage to do so.

“We saw that when she called an election despite saying many times there was no reason to call one,” he said.

“Her position on Brexit has been appalling. During the referendum campaign she was saying it would be best for Britain’s economy to stay in the EU, with a risk that firms would leave the UK if we no longer had access to the Single Market.

“Then immediately after the referendum, she changed her mind and argued for the hardest of Brexits. Someone who can do that has no principles and is not to be trusted.”

By contrast, said Mr Drakeford, Jeremy Corbyn was “authentic”.

He said: “You can think what you like about Jeremy Corbyn, but he is someone who always speaks honestly and doesn’t try to hide his views.

“I think people have responded to him positively because his authenticity comes across. He’s a refreshing contrast to the kind of politicians who are only interested in themselves.”
