How they rated

-

WAYNE HENNESSEY

Dealt with crosses well and was on alert before being beaten by Serbia’s first shot on target.

CHRIS GUNTER

The marathon man – who became Wales’ third most-capped player with this outing – didn’t stop, as ever. Kept side clean in main and provided good attacking width when possible.

JAMES CHESTER

Brilliant clearance from own line and again continued impressive form for his country with some really superb defending.

ASHLEY WILLIAMS

Had been in charge at the back and led a dominant performance, but will be agonising having been beaten by Mitrovic.

BEN DAVIES

Confident on the ball and looked set for clean-sheet his efforts had deserved. Happy going forward with ball.

JAZZ RICHARDS

Impressive outing from the Cardiff defender who used good intelligence to cut out danger and was willing to snap up chance to move up field.

JOE LEDLEY

Gave his all to stop midfield being overrun as it had been feared, but did seem to fade as game wore on as lack of Palace outings told.

DAVID EDWARDS

Given the start to help make sure midfield was robust and snapped onto loose balls to deny Serbia any chance to get hold of centre of the park. Ran and ran and ran.

JOE ALLEN

Superb stuff again from the Stoke man. Gave away possession once or twice but was assertive and always involved. Wales will miss him against Austria after picking up second booking.

STAR MAN: AARON RAMSEY

Was needed by Wales to step up in absence of Bale and duly did. A little isolated to start with but was a beacon of hope on counters and deserved to add to his Panenka penalty.

SAM VOKES

Put in some lung-busting runs to try and give defence rest as they cleared lines in second-half, but couldn’t quite hold up play enough and might have done more with chances.

SUBS

Emyr Huws (for David Edwards 72): Didn’t have time to settle before Mitorvic strike. Silly attempt at shot that ended spell of pressure. Tom Lawrence (for Sam Vokes 85): Questions over whether he should have come on earlier.
