Things we learned Ramsey keepsWales

Wales are still very much in the hunt for a place at the World Cup after Aaron Ramsey’s penalty secured an excellent draw in Serbia.

These are the main talking points and things we learned from the night’s action in Belgrade... ANOTHER LEAD THROWN AWAY For the fourth time in this qualifying campaign, and the second time against Serbia, Wales let slip a lead and threw away a winning position.

It happened away to Austria, then Georgia in Cardiff, then Serbia in Cardiff and this time the Serbs again in Belgrade.

Everything considered, a draw was still a damn good result for Wales in this one, particularly with a certain Gareth Bale absent.

However, if Wales do miss out on a place in Russia 2018, they will rue the fact that so many points have been lost which looked like being won.

The main protagonists in Group D Wales, Serbia, Austria and Ireland were always going to be tough to separate and draws were going to be a plenty.

But it is Wales who have drawn the most, five in six matches, and that has left them off the pace in the battle for top spot.

The draws have to start being turned into wins as we approach the business end of the qualifying campaign. JUNE, BEAUTIFUL JUNE There is something about this time of year that the Wales football team just like.

It was on June 11 last year that Chris Coleman’s men pulled off that historic win against Slovakia to set in motion the incredible sequence of results that saw us march to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

A year earlier, on June 12, they defeated Belgium in another never-tobe-forgotten qualifier in Cardiff.

With Bale missing, few gave Wales much hope in this one in Belgrade.

But they dug in, got the job done and pulled off what has to rank as a highly creditable result. That June good fortune once more.

Defeat, and dreams of top spot would have gone. The point gained means nothing has been lost on the top two of Serbia and Ireland, who only drew at home earlier versus Austria.

Wales may be off the pace, but they are not out of the race.

This was a must-not lose match and they didn’t lose it. RAMSEY IS WORLD CLASS In Bale’s absence Wales needed their other star turn to step up to the plate.

But why would anyone doubt Aaron Ramsey anyway?

Arguably even more influential than
