Wales set for warmest weekend as sun shines

Wales could be on course for one of the hottest weekends of the year so far – with temperatures set to hit 26°C by Monday.

Warm, humid air originating from the tropical Atlantic will bring summer warmth across much of the nation over the coming days, with the hot weather extending into next week.

A Met Office meteorologist said: “With high pressure building from the south west and warm air being drawn up from the Azores, daytime temperatures will widely be in the mid- to high 20Cs with some central and south-eastern parts reaching the low 30Cs (in the UK). It will also feel warm and humid overnight.”

Cardiff looks set to be the hottest place in the country, with temperatures reaching 25°C tomorrow and 26°C on Monday.

“Looking ahead to next week, it’s likely that the very warm weather will continue across southern parts of the UK, although it could turn more unsettled later in the week with a risk of some thundery downpours.” In light of the weather improvements, a group of parents at a Cardiff high school have voiced concerns about its strict uniform policy.

They claim pupils at Whitchurch High School are “becoming ill” in the summer heat due to the strict guidelines and a petition has now been set up for them to be relaxed.

Parents are allegedly frustrated with the uniform and claim it is “impractical”, with some students suffering minor burns from metal tie clips.

The petition was started by Alexis H, although it is unclear if they are a parent or not.

It was posted on the website Avaaz.org and reads: “Many parents have had enough of their children being made to wear a uniform that is impractical for summer temperatures and is resulting in children becoming ill from the heat, suffering minor burns from metal tie clips or being penalised for not wearing blazer jackets when they are too hot.

“We aim to petition the school to allow a summer alternative uniform such as polo shirts for all, skirts and school shorts for boys and girls. This is so that girls are not made to wear tights all year round and boys have a smart but more weather appropriate alternative to full length trousers.”

In a statement, the school said the policy on uniform could be adjusted in hot weather to make students feel more comfortable.

A spokesman said: “The governors are always keen to listen to the views of parents and students, and the school itself also monitors the weather to make sure the uniform is appropriate.”

He added: “Whitchurch High School’s uniform policy has been created by the governing body with the help of parent consultation and the uniform is very well regarded.”
