Ultimate island getaway – for just £500 a month

- Philip Dewey

IF you’ve ever dreamed of an island getaway, a place with beautiful views and with acres of land, then this could be for you, and all for just £500 a month.

But there is a catch if you want to rent the picturesque Ynys Giftan – you also need to stump up the cost of renovating the island’s farmhouse.

The incredible spot, in the Dwyryd Estuary near Portmeirion, Gwynedd, is available to let for the unbelievable price which would be ideal for someone wanting to get away from it all.

The 18-acre island falls within Snowdonia National Park and gives panoramic views of stunning coastline, mountains and the Irish Sea.

It also has its own place in history as it was owned by the 7th Baron Harlech.

It was gifted to the current Lord Harlech’s ancestors by Queen Anne in the early 1700s, and the name of the island means ‘Anne’s Gift Island’.

Estate agent Strutt & Parker, which is managing the let, described the project as an “exciting restoration” that would allow the tenant to put their own stamp in the island.

The farmhouse sits on the east shore and looks towards the village of Talsarnau.

The property which needs the renovation is a two-floor property.

The company said the renovated farmhouse could be used for personal use or could become part of a commercial enterprise.

Thomas Hanmer, of Strutt & Parker, said: “This is a blank canvas offering.

“Already we have had numerous interested parties putting forward proposals to enhance the island’s potential for tourism.

“The estate owner is keen to maximise this strength and maintain and enhance the wider public’s affection for the island and north Wales.

“The flexibility of use being offered and the opportunity to put forward a rental offer based on a scheme of the applicant’s choosing to reflect their investment is a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“There are only 43 unbridged tidal islands in Britain, and rarely do they become available to the public.”

The island had been run as a farm, but it has been uninhabited for 10 years. The farmhouse is structurally sound, but needs a lot of work to make it habitable again.

The farmhouse is made up of one large bedroom and a bathroom upstairs and has two receptions rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom downstairs.

At present there is no electricity at the farmhouse – there is a water pipe and septic tank, but it is not known if these work.

Proposals from anyone wishing to take up the lease should contact Strutt & Parker before August 31.
