WHAT’S FREE IN THE DAYTIME

-

THE festival will once again be presenting its highly popular series of free lunchtime recitals.

The traditional festival service will take place at St Teilo’s Church on Sunday, July 16 (11am) where the guest preacher will be the Rev Huw Anderson. The young Welsh cellist, Alasdair Gunneberg, will be the soloist in the Benedictus from Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man.’

On the opening Monday (1pm) Welsh pianist Caradog Williams will be appearing with the Canola Trio, followed on Tuesday by the Treske String Quartet from The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Wednesday will see pianist John Lenehan take to the stage, to provide his own fascinating incidental music to a silent movie and festival secretary Gerald Jones will be giving an 80th birthday piano recital the next day.

The series then draws to a close with what has become a much-anticipated annual event, an organ recital by Huw Tregelles Williams, regarded by many as Wales’ finest exponent of the ‘King of Instruments.’

As usual, the church will be adorned with flowers arranged by the ladies and friends of St Teilo’s.

Last year’s festival attracted critical acclaim from all and sundry, including 15 Members of Parliament, who signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons, praising both the event itself and its artistic director, Julia Jones. The festival trustees are hoping that this one will be even better. Refreshment will be available at Llandeilo’s many eating places. Cafe139 (Mary Ellen’s) will be open each day until 6pm.
