Singh’s latest famous name to sign up for Senior Open
WORLD Golf ‘Hall of Famer’ Vijay Singh will bid to add to his haul of three Major Championships after confirming he will tee it up at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club when the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex returns to south Wales from July 27-30.
The Fijian, who won the US PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004 and the Masters in 2000, will make his Senior Open Championship debut this month in what will be just his fourth European Senior Tour event.
The 54-year-old, who cut his teeth on the European Tour and enjoyed huge success subsequently on the PGA Tour, pushed Bernhard Langer all the way at this year’s KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, finishing just two strokes behind the German in second place.
He then followed that with a tied seventh finish at the US Senior Open last week.
Singh is one of a number of former Major Champions competing for the Senior Claret Jug this summer, joining the likes of Fred Couples, John Daly, Sir Nick Faldo, Langer, Sandy Lyle, Tom Watson, Todd Hamilton and Ian Woosnam in the field.
A host of former Ryder Cup captains and players are also set to tee it up on the Welsh links, with Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance teeing it up alongside Americans Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman and Watson.
Paul Broadhurst will defend the title he won in stunning fashion at Carnoustie last year, finishing ahead of Miguel Angel Jiménez.
Tickets and hospitality packages for the Senior Open Championship are still available, including the recently announced Youth Ticket, a more affordable ticket option for those aged 16-24.
Under-16s are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. In addition to full price season and day tickets, the Senior Open Championship is now offering Twilight Tickets (entry after 3pm) for Thursday, July 27, and Friday, July 28, priced £13.50 in advance or £15 on the gate.
