Artists welcome return of graffiti wall in centre
A POPULAR graffiti wall will return to its original location after an outcry from residents.
The Millennium Walkway near Cardiff’s iconic Principality Stadium had become known for its graffiti wall which stretched alongside the river.
But in the build-up to the Champions League final held in June the wall was removed by Cardiff council, despite more than 1,100 people signing a petition.
A new wall was created in Callaghan Square in April but the council now says that it will remove that wall, and reinstate the Millennium Walkway site.
Cabinet member Peter Bradbury said: “The graffiti wall on the Millennium Walkway was taken down ahead of the Champions League final and the council was looking at alternative sites for the artists.
“Those alternative sites weren’t found to be suitable so it has been agreed by Cardiff council to allow the previous activity to take place once again on the Millennium Walkway.”
The move has been welcomed by the city’s artists.
Kieron Jones, 45, who campaigned to save the wall before it was removed, said: “It is excellent news. It’s the obvious place for a hall of fame in the city.
“I think between us who campaigned we put a good case forward for keeping it, and the petition was backed quite heavily. People are glad it’s coming back.”
Mr Jones, from Oner Signs, said the wall is a part of the city’s heritage.
He added: “So many people from all over the world come to see Cardiff, and this wall is part of our cultural heritage.
“The walkway is more public and it’s a good place to work.”
