PROSECUTION and defence teams have given their closing speeches in the case of a police officer on trial for rape and sexual assault.

Detective Constable Mark Glover, from South Wales Police, denies three counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault.

On day six of his trial at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Simon Mills and defence barrister Jonathan Rees gave their closing speeches to the jury.

The charges relate to two alleged victims and span the period between summer 2015 and summer 2016.

Glover, 46, from Carys Close in Penarth – who was based at Barry police station – specialised in investigating burglary.

The court previously heard the defendant had played and coached both rugby and cricket for local and police teams.

Count one relates to an alleged rape in August 2015 involving the first complainant.

Giving evidence, the woman said: “I just started crying because I was really shocked. I pushed him away but he grabbed my arm and was really angry.”

The court heard the second alleged rape occurred about two weeks later when Glover again “cornered” the woman.

Prosecutors said the defendant behaved inappropriately towards a second woman before sexually assaulting her in February 2016.

The court heard Glover told the woman “you know you want it” despite her telling him to stop.

Prosecutors allege Glover raped the first complainant again in July 2016. She told the court she locked herself in a bathroom but the defendant said: “There’s no point in hiding. I can bang the door down.”

When he was interviewed the defendant denied sexual assault, stating the second woman had consented.

In a second police interview, he denied having any sexual contact with the first complainant, stating she had “fabricated” her account. The trial continues.
