Broodmares of the future show what they can do

- Maureen Lloyd

Saturday’s race meeting at Tairgwaith was centred on the STAGBI mare’s race for future broodmares, so all the races were straight races with the finales being the STAGBI mare’s Free For All and then the Free For All for the other horses.

The first race of the day was the Novice race, where Mathew Tromans picked up a catch drive on Made in Wales (Evans, Red Roses) and navigated him to a win which promotes him into open racing. In second was Beacon Spellbound (Davies, Huntington), while My Amazing Grace (Evans, Red Roses) was third.

There were two Grade B races. In the first, Makemeamillionayr (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey), driven by daughter Louisa Barton, claimed victory ahead of last week’s winner Fold the Notes (Perks, Presteigne), while Habberley Haste (Lloyd, New Radnor) was third.

In the second Grade B, Lakeview Meg (Atherton-Rees, Narberth), driven as usual by Mathew Tromans, on her first outing in open racing, secured a convincing win ahead of George Gentle (Lewis, Welshpool), while The Bold Jack (James, Dorstone) ran well to be third.

In the Grade A, No Mercy, the only gate horse (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey), with Mark White at the controls, dictated the race to secure victory in front of Habberley Playboy (Johns & Gittins, Shrewsbury), while the back marker Lakeside Pan (Elder, New Quay) was third.

The two Nursery races were next, with Beg for Mercy (Tromans, Newcastle) running a superb race to win from Garth Vader (Williams, Brecon) and Ithon Overdrive (Lewis, Welshpool).

In the second nursery, Dernol Yankee (Wozencraft, Llangurig) claimed victory from Brywins Awesome (Hardwick, Brecon), with Evenwood Predator (Duggan, Howey) in third.

In the Baby Novice race, Howdoyoulikemenow (Perks, Presteigne), with Becky Williams on board, just hung on to secure his passage into the Novice division, beating the inform Turn the Paige (Miles, Merthyr), while Hilltop Recon (Lloyd, New Radnor) was third.

In the dash, the Novice Evenwood Thumps Up (Lewis, Llanbister) provided another win for his driver Mel Langford, with George Gentle (Lewis, Welshpool) in second and Camden Lock (Lloyd & Samuel, Painscastle) third.

In the STAGBI mare’s race, it was the exciting Baby Novice Greenhill Lillian (Thomas, Rhymney), driven by Andrew Hardwick, who claimed a narrow victory in front of Tillies Larg (Evans, Brecon), while previous winner Hyar Temptation (Thomas, Tregroes) was third.

The final race of the day was the Free For All, where Lakeside Pan (Elder, New Quay) showed his supreme ability, as usual under the guidance of his trainer Wayne Elder. Just behind was another star, Chinatown Kolt (Jones, Llanllwni), while the ever-popular Scoobies Dream (Williams, Brecon) was third.

The next race meeting is the prestigious Penybont fixture on Wednesday, August 2, starting at 1.30pm, while on Saturday, August 5, the traditional Tregaron meeting also starts at 1.30pm.
