MP Crabb’s son in ‘miracle’ escape from crash

-

FORMER Welsh Secretary and one-time Conservative leadership candidate Stephen Crabb has revealed his son was involved in a horror crash in France while on holiday after his GCSEs.

Stephen Crabb, Conservative MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, said it was a miracle his son got out alive.

The teenager had been enjoying a holiday after his GCSEs with relatives when the incident happened on the A7 motorway near Orange in southeastern France.

Posting a picture of the wreckage of one of the cars involved, he said on Monday: “Miracle that my son got out of this alive. He was enjoying a holiday post-GCSEs with his auntie and uncle in France.”

The former Tory leadership hopeful said: “They all emerged with cuts, bruises and burns. So much to be thankful for right now. Life is precious.”

French regional news website ledauphine.com reported that five people were injured, one particularly badly, in a night-time crash on the A7.

They were all taken to hospital in Orange and the motorway was closed for an hour to allow the emergency services to respond.

It said that three vehicles were involved and the driver of one had fled and was intercepted several kilometres further on by the police.

It comes just over a year since Mr Crabb resigned from the Government, stepping down “in the best interests” of his family after it emerged he had sent intimate messages to a younger woman.

Mr Crabb had served as Work and Pensions Secretary and launched a bid for the Conservative leadership after David Cameron’s decision to stand down in the wake of the EU referendum result.

Before taking over as Work and Pensions Secretary, following Iain Duncan Smith’s dramatic resignation over benefit cuts, Mr Crabb was Welsh Secretary.

He joined the cabinet by taking up that post in July 2014, having previously been a Wales Office minister and government whip.
