AMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a mother-of-two was stabbed at her home.

The woman, named locally as Betty Jordan, was found suffering from serious injuries at a house in Trem y Garnedd, on Bangor’s Maesgeirchen estate just before 9am on Monday.

North Wales Police and Wales Ambulance Service were called to the house and Mrs Jordan, 53, was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, but later died despite the best efforts of medical staff to save her.

A manhunt was launched to find the nursing home worker’s killer with armed officers and the police helicopter looking for a man who was believed to have left the house on Monday.

The property was cordoned off by police as detectives and forensic officers made their inquiries. Residents were told to stay in their homes and lock their windows and doors as officers stepped up their search.

A 54-year-old local man was arrested on Monday afternoon at a house in Y Felinheli on suspicion of murder. The man was yesterday in custody and being questioned by detectives at Caernarfon police station.

Neighbours of Mrs Jordan expressed shock over her killing.

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said Mrs Jordan was the mother of two grown-up children.

She said: “It’s so sad. They were just nice people.”

Another Maesgeirchen resident, Billy Davies, 57, said Mrs Jordan worked at the Gwynedd council-run Plas Hedd residential home on Penrhyn Avenue, Maesgeirchen, near where she lived.

A shocked Mr Davies said: “I have known them (the family) for years. She was always smiling. It’s a shame.”

Plas Hedd manager Carys Owen said: “This news has come as a massive shock to all of us. We saw Betty not just as a colleague but as a much loved friend. She was extremely popular and well-respected by her fellow staff members and by the home’s residents and their families.

“Betty had worked at Plas Hedd since 2007, and during this time she truly made a difference to the lives of the older people who live here.

“Betty was a warm, caring person with a bubbly personality. She was full of fun and we will all miss her terribly. All of us here at Plas Hedd extend our deepest condolences to Betty’s children and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”

In a joint statement Marchog councillors Nigel Pickavance and Dylan Fernley said: “We are shocked and saddened by the news that a member of our community has died in such sudden and tragic circumstances.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victim’s loved ones and we know that that the community will rally and do everything possible to support them.
