Chaos on railways after body found on line

-

A BODY believed to be hit by a train was found on the railway line between Cardiff and Bridgend.

All rail lines between Bridgend and Cardiff Central were blocked for more than three hours yesterday morning after officers found a body in an “unexplained” incident.

The discovery caused severe disruption with numerous trains along the line cancelled or diverted.

British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line close to Bridgend rail station following reports of a body on the line. The call came into police at 6.25am.

“Officers attended the scene and found a body which had sustained injuries consistent with being struck by a train. Officers will now work to identify the person and inform their family.

“The incident is currently being treated as unexplained. An investigation is ongoing as to how the person came to be on the tracks.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called shortly after 6.30am to reports of an incident on the railway tracks near Bridgend.

They sent two paramedics in rapid response vehicles and a crew in an emergency ambulance to the scene.

Arriva Trains Wales and Great Western Railway services were affected and a replacement bus service was put in place.

Trains running through Bridgend and Cardiff Central were cancelled or delayed by up to 40 minutes until around 10am.

Some trains were diverted via the Vale of Glamorgan line.
