City-chase driver, 23, had filmed woman in uni toilet

-

THE driver who left a man for dead in a hit and run had already avoided jail when he was caught trying to film a woman in a toilet.

Mohammad Yousuf Arshad, 23, was jailed for three years on Tuesday after he ran over pedestrian John Dare while driving the wrong way down a road in Cardiff city centre during a high-speed police chase.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Mr Dare, 45, was left feeling “lucky to be alive” after undergoing major surgery and suffering from head injuries and a broken shoulder.

WalesOnline can now reveal that Arshad had already been before the courts when he admitted filming a woman in a toilet in 2014.

Arshad had posed as a student and was mingling with others before going in the women’s toilets at a Cardiff University library.

The woman, a secondyear student, was in a toilet cubicle when she noticed a mobile phone over her head.

Cardiff Magistrates’ Court heard that he was taken to security by the victim and her boyfriend and that police later found an image taken on campus on his phone.

He pleaded guilty to voyeurism by recording a person doing a private act for his own sexual gratification and was given a 12-month community order.

Now Arshad, of Cathays Terrace in Cardiff, will spend the next three years in prison after he drove through Cardiff at high speed in July, even driving over the pavement to get away from police, before he knocked down Mr Dare and fled the scene.

He had already been disqualified from driving.

He has now been banned from driving for six and a half years.
