Gylfi’s greatest goals for Swans

-

REGARDLESS of the manner of his departure, Gylfi Sigurdsson will go down as one of the finest players to ever pull on the white shirt and he has certainly provided supporters with any number of memorable moments to remember.

While narrowing down Sigurdsson’s best Swansea goals is a fiendishly difficult task, ANDREW GWILYM decided to have a crack at picking out five that stick in the memory. Wigan (a), Saturday, March 3, 2012 Sigurdsson did not take long to make an impression following his arrival on loan from Hoffenheim, grabbing the second and third goals of his spell in south Wales in this 2-0 win at the DW Stadium.

Having already put one strike in the top corner, Sigurdsson’s second was to become a familiar sight for Swans fans as his superb free-kick left Ali Al-Habsi rooted to the spot and sent the ball into the top corner. Blackburn (a), Saturday, January 24, 2015 This was not a day to remember for the Swans as they were dumped out of the FA Cup 3-1 by Championship Rovers, with Kyle Bartley and Sigurdsson seeing red for Garry Monk’s men.

However, with the game goalless and Swansea already a man down, ‘the Iceman’ produced a sensational strike to give the visitors the lead at Ewood Park, angling infield before fizzing an unstoppable drive into the net from 25 yards. Arsenal (h), Sunday, November 9, 2014 Swansea were trailing to an Alexis Sanchez goal when Kieran Gibbs was forced to haul down debutant Mo Barrow a little way outside the Arsenal area.

As the rain poured down, Sigurdsson readied himself and dispatched a beautiful, perfectly-placed curling strike beyond Wojciech Szczesny into the top corner. Minutes later, Bafetimbi Gomis’ header gave the Swans a lead they would not surrender. Manchester City (h), Sunday, May 17, 2015 With eighth place secured, Monk told his Swansea players to go out and take the game to star-studded City, providing the Liberty with a final day thriller.

The Swans trailed 2-0 when Sigurdsson received a pass on the edge of the area and, with the minimum fuss, took one touch to open up his body and another to send the ball arrowing just inside the post into the bottom corner. Clinical, ruthless finishing at its best. Manchester United (a), Sunday, April 30, 2017 This proved to be Sigurdsson’s last goal for Swansea, and you could make a case he saved the best for last.

Swansea trailed to a controversial penalty with time running out and Sigurdsson standing over a free-kick.

There was a delay as Ander Herrera ran to stand on the line, only to be waved away by Red Devils keeper David De Gea.

No sooner had the Spaniard returned to the United wall than Sigurdsson sent a right-footed effort into the net exactly where Herrera had been stood, starting the ball off outside the right-hand post before it curled in to beat a motionless De Gea. Pure magic. Wilfried Bony – sold to Manchester City, replaced by Bafetimbi Gomis/Andre Ayew There was a feeling of the inevitable about the Ivory Coast striker’s move to Manchester City, which eventually went Scott Sinclair – sold to Manchester City, replaced by Pablo Hernandez Once Michael Laudrup indicated that Sinclair – Swansea’s first £1million signing – would not discuss a new contract, the Allen had a superb first Premier League season in the Swans midfield and, when Brendan Rodgers headed for Anfield he elected to take the Welshman with him in a £15m deal.

South Korea international Ki arrived at the Liberty a couple of weeks later for a then club-record £5.5million. The former
