STUDENTS picking up their A level and AS results today are being urged to consider a future in Stem subjects.

Two of Wales’ leading scientific organisations made the call saying training in Stem - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - provides valuable skills Wales needs.

The Life Sciences Hub Wales, which represents the Welsh life sciences sector, and Techniquest, the UK’s longest established science centre, made the joint call to coincide with the release of A and AS results today and GCSE results next week.

“Stem subjects are highly valued across a range of occupations and the skills students develop will help Wales build a stronger and more sustainable economy,” they said.

Many businesses and organisations offering Stem roles in Wales struggle to recruit candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge, and especially female candidates, the two organisations warned.

Dr Penny Owen, interim executive chair of the Life Sciences Hub, said: “Wales has a vibrant and thriving life sciences sector encompassing a number of different disciplines, with many exciting career opportunities available in both established and emerging companies. The innovative members of the Hub are working on many life-changing projects, from cutting edge digital health developments to new products to cure diseases such as cancer.

“These businesses, and new ones not yet established, will need the very best candidates with the right skills and knowledge to help them continue to grow and innovate in future.

“I would encourage Welsh students picking up their results this month to consider these opportunities when planning their own future; a Stem career is a rewarding and fulfilling option.”

Lesley Kirkpatrick, chief executive of Techniquest, said: “The Stem arena has the power to transform how people learn, work and live in the future.

“The next generation will be crucial to how Wales competes in this field on an international level.

“As an educational charity, we are committed to ensuring that Wales develops a scientifically literate society through interactive Stem engagement.

“We are committed to supporting the development of the Welsh economy by inspiring the next generation of Welsh scientists.

“Through both in-reach to our science discovery centre and outreach at schools across Wales, we support teachers to deliver Stem subjects in a fun and engaging way.

“With such a varied and rewarding career path, we’re passionate about encouraging young people in Wales to choose a career in Stem.”
