The quest for sixth-form success at St John’s College

-

ST John’s College has achieved an enviable reputation both in Wales and among the top independent schools in England as a centre of academic excellence, achieving the best secondary school A-level record in Wales over 17 years. This year’s results were exceptional – A/A* 83%, A*-B 98% with a pass rate of 100%.

This year marks the school’s 30th anniversary and it remains committed to its aim of providing the best possible education for girls and boys as they become young women and young men, embracing all that life has to offer with passion, commitment and integrity.

Of this year’s exceptional results, headmaster, Mr Gareth Lloyd, said: “We are absolutely thrilled for our students. Their achievements this year are simply outstanding, the best in the history of St John’s. These results are a testimony to both the students’ exemplary work ethic and their teachers’ resolute commitment to support each and every pupil. Many congratulations to the class of 2017!”

The school’s strong, close-knit family community ensures that all pupils and students receive the care necessary to develop their full potential. Indeed, Estyn inspectors observed that “Throughout the school, there is a strong sense of collective purpose and a commitment to shared values and aims. The quality of teaching and learning has led to exceptional outcomes for pupils of all abilities” (Crown Copyright 2012).

St John’s College has a distinguished record of success with university admissions. Specialist mentoring and one-to-one guidance are offered so that students are fully supported with their subject choices, Ucas personal statements, university choices and ultimately career paths.

The school has an outstanding reputation for gaining places at first-class universities. This year nearly half of the grades awarded were A* which is a truly outstanding achievement for the students, including a significant number with four A*/A grades, who will be proceeding to Oxbridge and top Russell Group universities.

The open evenings for sixth-form candidates have been extended to allow prospective students and parents further opportunity to discover the exciting co-curricular enrichment programme, dedicated to enhancing sixth-form provision for young adults, to benefit from a culture of aspiration and high expectation.

Students are encouraged to participate in a range of activities aimed at augmenting their educational experience. There is ample opportunity to engage in public speaking and debating, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a wide range of sports and volunteering.

In the performing arts, students have the opportunity to become fully involved in the staging of senior dramatic productions, LAMDA and the award-winning concert orchestra. They can also take an active role in the student council and sixth-form prefect system, as well mentor and advise younger pupils and become inspiring role models.

You are most welcome to visit on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 4.30pm to 7pm where you will find enthusiastic sixth-form students and teachers willing to discuss the remarkable provision made for academic success in the enhanced sixth form.
