A-level excellence again for Cathedral School

-

AT the Cathedral School, excellent academic results and exceptional co-curricular programme fosters the growth of intellectual curiosity, offering enormous breadth of opportunity. High-quality pastoral care and the school’s Christian ethos gives students the opportunity to reach their full potential in a vibrant, fun and supportive environment.

The beautiful campus and links with Llandaff Cathedral inspire a sense of heritage, while a first-class curriculum enables young people to look confidently to the future.

Acknowledged by Estyn as “excellent”, the Cathedral School, with 800 pupils aged three to 18, is one of the top-performing co-educational schools in Wales at A-level and GCSE.

The school was delighted that its A-level students achieved such outstanding results last week, following the introduction of sixth-form teaching in 2013. With a 100% overall pass rate, 57% of all grades were A*/A and 77% A*-B; more than a third of the cohort achieved exclusively A*/A grades. Students will progress to the most selective and sought-after universities, including Oxford, University College London, Bath, Durham and Nottingham.

Very high levels of inclusion in music, sport and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award are a reflection of the school’s commitment to ‘breadth’ as well as ‘depth’. Standards of music performance are unmatched and the school is equally proud of its sporting tradition, which has this year seen the Year 11-13 girls become National Urdd Netball Champions and the school host its first cricket fixture against the MCC.

With a full range of academic subjects available (England Pathway Qualifications), very small classes, highly experienced staff with close university links, the sixth-form culture is ambitious and supportive in equal measure.

Students study and socialise in the dynamic, yet relaxed atmosphere of the sixth-form centre. This is the hub of the sixth-form community, where students can relax in the common room or undertake independent study. A professional mentoring programme pairs students with leading figures in the areas of working life they are interested in for advice and guidance and the school regularly welcomes inspirational practitioners to address the sixth form and students are also able to network at Cardiff Business Club.

The school prides itself on being a strong learning community. It is important that everyone feels valued and that they have a meaningful part to play. From the initial Year 7 bonding weekend, creating new friendships in the seniors, to the competitive house system, a mutually-supportive environment means that every pupil’s skill, interest, talent and potential are nurtured.

School transport is offered along six routes from Castleton, Cowbridge, Caerphilly, Colwinston, Llantrisant and Lisvane. Working parents are helped by wrap-around care from 8am to 6pm and a holiday club for our pupils and their siblings.

Financial support via means-tested bursaries is available at Year 7 and 12 entry, with scholarships in a range of disciplines from academic to sport and music.

Why not visit the school on its whole school open morning on Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 10am to 12.30pm to see what makes the Cathedral School such a dynamic and high achieving place of learning.
