Thousands queue from dawn for supermarket wine deal

-

THOUSANDS of shoppers woke up early on Saturday to try to snaffle up a cheap Prosecco deal for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Pictures from across the country showed long queues forming outside Lidl supermarkets before opening time.

The scenes were reminiscent of Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year which traditionally sees Christmas bargain-hunters queuing overnight to grab the best seasonal bargains.

The stampede was for a case of six bottles of Lidl own-brand Allini Prosecco for £20 – the equivalent of £3.33 a bottle. A single bottle usually sells for £5.79.

However, many disappointed shoppers found that the discounted fizz had sold out within minutes of the stores opening, sparking arguments and complaints.

Shoppers up and down the country posted pictures of queues at their local Lidl.

Carmarthen shopper Dafydd Williams said: “I went to my local store this morning to get some Prosecco and was told by the store manager that there was a queue outside the store before it opened.

“But I was told they had only been allocated one pallet of Prosecco.

“If you’re going to run a promotion, how is one pallet going to be enough?

Nichola Scorey, who tried to pick up the deal at the Aberdare store, left empty-handed as it has sold out by 8.05am. She said: “Lidl was mental. All the Prosecco sold out by 8.05am.”
