Cardiff gets into top 100 of prestigious university rankings
A WELSH university has been named as one of the top 100 universities in the world, according to a ranking of global institutions.
The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities league table for 2017 ranked Cardiff University as the 99th best university in the world.
This is the university’s highest position since the ranking system began in 2003, listing the top 500 universities in the world.
Cardiff is Wales’ only university to be featured in the top 100 and features ninth out of 38 UK institution which have been listed in the top 500.
The only other Welsh university to be featured in the list was Bangor University, which was ranked between 401-500.
Among Cardiff University’s successes in the table were five top 100 subject rankings in the social sciences category, three top 100 subject rankings in the medical sciences field and two top 100 subject rankings in the life sciences category.
Cardiff University Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan said: “I’m proud of our progresses in this internationally important league table.
“To break into the top 100 for the first time is testament to the hard work of our staff and students and reinforces our position as a high-performing global university.”
The league table is produced annually and is based on indicators including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Field Medals, the number of frequently cited researchers and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science.
According to the The Complete University Guide league, the top university in Wales is Cardiff University, ranked 37th in the UK.
This is followed by Swansea University at 44, Bangor University at 65, Cardiff Metropolitan University at 67, Aberystwyth University at 68, the University of South Wales at 110, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David at 119 and Wrexham Glyndwr University at 128.
