Thousands soak up holiday sun at city’s festivals

-

THOUSANDS attended events across Cardiff this weekend as people soaked up the late August sunshine.

Cardiff Bay saw thousands attend the Harbour Festival and a three-day music and arts festival was held on the city’s Womanby Street.

The Extreme Sailing Series returned to Cardiff Bay this year for the sixth year.

Cardiff was one of seven cities selected to host elite-level sailing crews, including the British team, Land Rover BAR Academy, who are mentored by senior members of Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup team.

Bank holiday visitors were able to watch the racing in the bay and browse among the food stalls. On Saturday night the decking of the Norwegian Church was turned into a stage to host three bands.

Cardiff council cabinet member Peter Bradbury said: “Every year this fantastic event showcases Cardiff Bay at its very best.

“With less than a year until the Volvo Ocean Race arrives in the city, Cardiff Bay will be transformed into an international sporting hub. With a race village attracting thousands of visitors to the city, this is set to be one of the biggest major sporting events to come to the Welsh capital and is one to be very excited about.”

Meanwhile, Womanby Street hosted the HUB festival. The festival, which won the Best Festival Award at the recent Cardiff Music Awards, included music, a “silent disco” and street performances.

Both events were boosted by glorious bank holiday sunshine, which is set to continue today.
