-

A JEALOUS boyfriend who threatened to stab a man after his girlfriend said she would have sex with someone else has been jailed.

Ieuan Johnson, of Williams Close, Newport, was sentenced at Newport Crown Court after he was convicted of possessing a bladed article in a public place.

The 20-year-old was caught on CCTV throwing a kitchen knife with a red handle into the bushes after the police were called to the Solas supported living unit in George Street, Newport, on July 24.

Speaking at the hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Byron Broadstock said: “The defendant and his girlfriend, Rose Clarke, had an argument and the defendant went to the address in George Street.

“Witnesses described [Johnson] being drunk when his girlfriend went to the front door, where another argument developed.

“One of the people working there went to speak with them. Mr Johnson lifted his arms and the witness saw a kitchen knife hidden in his trousers.”

The witness called police and Johnson took the knife out and threw it on the ground as the police approached.

Mr Broadstock added: “The couple had an argument and he said his girlfriend indicated she was going to have sex with another male.

“Mr Johnson said he intended to stab the boy she was going to have sex with.”

Defence barrister Sarah Waters told the court her client had a “clear issue” with anger”.

Recorder Greg Bull QC sentenced him to 10 months in jail of which he’ll serve half in prison and the remainder on licence.
