Dolphin acrobatics amaze sightseers

-

VISITORS to the Gower Peninsula were left stunned as a wild dolphin treated them to this breathtaking acrobatic display.

The short-beaked common dolphin was filmed repeatedly leaping almost four metres out of the water near Worm’s Head on the Gower coast on Friday.

Crew member of the Sea Serpent tour boat Lizzie Hobbs filmed the dolphin throughout the day.

“You don’t see that very often,” the 28-year-old said. “The dolphins do come to the boat and we have had them splashing the passengers but we have never quite seen something like that.”

Lizzie has been working on the wildlife spotting tour for about four years – a job she has held while studying Marine Biology at Swansea University.

She added: “It was a really good moment. I have seen dolphins abroad before but never anything like that. It was extra special becase it was in Wales. I think people think that we have to go abroad to see amazing wildlife but it’s just on our doorstep.”

Lizzie has been studying the seals at Worm’s Head for her master’s degree, and often takes photographs and collects data from the area.

Louise Gibbons, 26, from London, was visiting Gower with her dad Simon, stepmum Sue and 12-year-old brother Daniel.

She said: “We all felt really lucky to observe such behaviour from this pod of common dolphins.”
