Flynn insists County will not underestimate Robins

-

MIKE Flynn has insisted he is not underestimating Cheltenham Town as Newport County welcome the Robins to Rodney Parade tonight.

The Exiles are just one point below the play-off places after a bright start to the season but Cheltenham have struggled in the opening weeks and are just one point off the bottom.

But Flynn has warned against complacency as County look to climb back up the table.

“There’s no such thing as an easy game in League Two and if anybody thinks that then they need their head banging,” he exclaimed.

“Cheltenham will be hard to beat, they played Exeter City and lost 4-3.

“They scored some good goals, they’ve got some good players and a good, experienced manager.

“It’s almost like a derby, it’s a close game and they’ll be up for it.

“They are going to be a tough team and you saw that last season when at one point they could’ve got dragged into it and gone down but they went on a run of results, showed their resilience and I think they are a better team this year.”

After being held to a goalless RODNEY PARADE 7.45PM NEWPORT CTY v CHELTENHAM draw by Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, Flynn hopes to see a packed-out Rodney Parade inspire his side to victory tonight.

“If we want to make it intimidating then we need as many fans at the stadium as possible,” he added.

“It’s great – they are loud, they are antagonising for the opposition, supportive for the players and as long as they see effort and talent on show the fans will be fully behind the team.

“And that’s one thing I’ll be making sure we are – committed and playing good football.

“I want to put on a performance that makes the fans proud and go away happy.”

Former midfielder Flynn has been pleased with his side’s creativity but is hoping to see a more clinical edge in County’s attack after their profligacy showed against Exeter and Wycombe.

“I think I saw an interesting stat that we’ve had the most shots in the Football League,” he said.

“I’d be more concerned if we weren’t creating the chances and opportunities.”
