Summer auction shines a light on Welsh rarities
ANTHEMION Auctions had a fantastic summer sale with some amazing prices. The Welsh arts shone through, with the top-selling lot being an oil painting titled Above the Harbour, by Donald McIntyre, which rocketed past its £3,000-£5,000 estimate to sell in the room to a local collector for a hammer price of £7,800.
The other Donald McIntyres in the auction realised £4,500 and £3,800 respectively, proving this artist’s popularity and desirability at auction at the moment.
Other paintings by Welsh artists, such as a landscape watercolour by Sir Kyffin Williams, sold for £1,800 and a small oil painting of a man digging by Will Roberts for £1,250, all exceeding their pre-sale estimates and finding new homes and walls to adorn. We truly love living with these magnificent paintings while they are with us to be sold, and get to appreciate their beauty, style and aesthetic qualities before they find new homes.
The Welsh theme continued with the Holy Grail of rugby programmes, the 1905 Wales versus New Zealand programme for the game played on December 16, which, incidentally, Wales won. It found its way to an avid and very happy collector for an astounding hammer price of £4,000. Rarities such as these are always well contested. We had the pleasure of auctioning an extremely rare book of the mythological Alphabet by I Paulini, dating from the 16th century and in exceptional condition, which was purchased for a hammer price of £3,100.
