Start-ups in Newport have almost doubled in five years

THE rate of business start-ups in Newport has almost doubled in five years.

In 2015, there were 38.4 new businesses born in Newport for every 10,000 people living in the area, or about 560 new enterprise­s, according to most recent data from the Office for National Statistics.

That is one the biggest increases seen across in the UK compared to 2011, when there were 24.9 new businesses per 10,000 people, or about 360 new businesses.

Portsmouth also saw an increase in the rate of new businesses born per person.

In 2015, there were 47.5 new start-ups born for every 10,000 people living in the area, or about 1,000, more than in 2011, when there were 30.8 or about 360.

There was an increase also in Cardiff, where there were 50.4 new start-ups created per 10,000 people living in the area, or about 1,800.

In 2011, there were 32.9 for every 10,000 people or about 1,100.

Swansea saw an increase too, with 33.7 new businesses born per 10,000 in 2015, compared to 23.2 new businesses per 10,000 people in 2011.

Across the UK there were 59 new businesses born in 2015 for every 10,000 people, about 370,000 new enterprise­s.

That works out as an increase of more than 120,000 extra newborn businesses in 2015 compared to the total launched in 2011, when there were 41 new start-ups for every 10,000 people or about 253,000.
