Extravagance doesn’t guarantee success

-

RE Everton Football Club. There is an old saying, “money don’t buy you happiness, just helps you spend your misery in comfort”.

Ronald Koeman is finding this out to his cost despite signing ten players in the summer transfer window, which included our very own Gylfi Sigurdsson for £45m after weeks of chasing, and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for £30m. Of the others, £40.6m were disclosed fees, four players were undisclosed fees and one free. Of course, Everton have plenty of money between selling Romelu Lukaku for £75m and the rich owners.

Despite this, they are in the bottom three with four points and a goal difference of minus eight (2-10) after losing to Man Utd 4-0.

I know I shouldn’t be unkind, but as far as I am concerned it couldn’t happen to a better bloke. He is already talking about what he is going to do in the January window, but after what happened to his compatriot Frank de Boer I wonder if he will still be there.

He should take some tips from Swans’ Paul Clement, who has spent comparatively very little and who finds his team having five points from five games, with a goal difference of minus three after having gained a hard-earned point at Spurs with a great defensive display.

Football is a funny old game, as Jimmy Greaves used to say, and a lot will happen before the end of the season. The Toffees may end up in the top six and we may end up at the other end of the table. We can only wait and see. WR Steel St Clears
