Hillary Clinton speaks Welsh on The One show

-

HILLARY Clinton spoke Welsh on The One Show last night as she was told she is almost a third Welsh.

Mrs Clinton’s great-grandfather was a Welsh miner who moved to Pennsylvania in 1879.

After the former American president hopeful was told by The One Show that she was 31.25% Welsh, presenter Alex Jones decided to teach her some of the language.

The Ammanford-born presenter said: “As you’re part Welsh Hillary I thought I’d teach you.

“So if you could repeat ‘pleidle-iswch dros Hillary yn ugain ugain’.”

Miss Jones received an enthusiastic high five from Mrs Clinton after revealing what she said translated as “vote for Hillary in 2020”.

The former First Lady said: “I plead total ignorance. And I’m very excited to be going to Swansea. I’m really looking forward to that.”

Mrs Clinton is being conferred with an honorary doctorate by Swansea University today.

The award is being made in recognition of her commitment to promoting the rights of families and children around the world.

She is due to meet students at the Bay Campus after receiving her doctorate.

The One Show had been asked by Swansea University to dig into Mrs Clinton’s family history, revealing her Welsh connections.

Mrs Clinton was a lawyer before becoming First Lady during her husband Bill’s two terms of office.

She was then a US senator for eight years prior to two unsuccessful presidential bids, the latter a defeat to Republican opponent Donald Trump last November.

Clinton is attending Swansea University’s Bay Campus to receive her doctorate, and will then unveil a commemorative stone to mark the renaming of the College of Law to the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law.

University vice-chancellor Professor Richard Davies said: “We are honoured to present this award to Hillary Rodham Clinton, a figure of enormous international significance, and one synonymous with human rights.

“It is tremendous that she has chosen Swansea University for her first public appearance on this visit to the UK.”
