He’s behind you! Twinkle-toed Shane lines up his panto debut

-

IT’S the story rugby back lines the world over are familiar with when they think about Shane Williams: “He’s behind you!”

But the Welsh wing wizard, whose twinkle toes saw him become Wales’ record try-scorer in a glittering career, has played out his story on the rugby pitch – until now.

Because the 40-year-old Ospreys legend is set to see his life turned into a pantomime – and he’ll take to the stage himself alongside referee Nigel Owens.

Williams – more familiar with tearing up defences in a career that saw him represent the British and Irish Lions and twice win Six Nations Grand Slams with Wales – will sing and dance as he takes the lead in Shane a’r Belen Aur (Shane and the Golden Ball).

And while the 40-year-old entertained tens of thousands all over the world during his rugby days, he admits trodding the boards will be a “completely different experience”.

The show, at Port Talbot’s Princess Royal Theatre on November 22, will be filmed and screened on S4C on Christmas Day and also features presenter Sarra Elgan and actors Tara Bethan, Ieuan Rhys, and Rhys ap William.

“I haven’t been on stage since I was in school, so this will be a completely different experience,” said Williams.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and that’s what this pantomime is about – overcoming challenges to perform on the big stage. I can’t wait to get on that stage with the actors and to work hard to put this show together.”

Tickets go on sale today and cost £5, all profits go to Velindre and CLIC Sargent. To book visit npttheatres.co.uk/ princessroyal or call 01639 763214.
