All have ownership of our language
YOUR correspondent Robert Ian Williams (WM letters, October 17) appears very disturbed with the Welsh Government wishing to promote the Welsh language.
In Wales, everyone has ownership of our language and heritage, irrespective of their ability to speak Welsh due to historical or personal circumstances.
He points out that Plaid Cymru, attracted 175,000 votes in the UK general election in 1970 as against 164,000 in 2017, a fact he wishes to “hang his hat on”.
In 1970 Plaid Cymru was a totally inclusive nationalist party, the only party then supporting full democratic devolution of power from London and ultimately full self government.
Today, not one party represented at the Welsh Assembly can envisage Wales without a devolved government.
The London-centric parties have come a long way since 1970. Several former Plaid colleagues, some high profile, have jumped ship to the unionist temptation.
Result, we are now all nationalists to a degree.
My sincere thanks to those elected men and women who are aiming high, promoting our culture and language and removing the threat of a total English Russification of our country.
Our national anthem should be translated for RI Williams and anyone who supports his views of our nation.
