DAVIES SEES THE MERITS OF NEW WALES SELECTION POLICY

-

SCARLETS scrum-half Gareth Davies has delivered an upbeat verdict on the new Wales selection policy, saying it will help to keep the best players with the regions.

The Welsh Rugby Union this week announced that from next season exiled players will only be able to don the red jersey if they have won 60 or more caps, with the aim being to protect the regional game.

Davies is out of contract himself next summer, but he reckons the change will prove beneficial for the game this side of the Severn Bridge.

“I think it’s definitely a positive for Welsh rugby, especially for the near future,” said the 27-year-old.

“It will definitely keep the best Welsh players in Wales so it can only be a good thing moving forward.”

Davies was called into the British & Irish Lions set-up as a replacement but didn’t feature in any of the games.

Capped 25 times by his country, he is bound to attract interest as he moves to the end of his contract and says he has yet to decide his plans for next term.

Asked would he be staying in regional rugby, he said: “It depends on whether I want to play for Wales or not.

“I’m not really thinking about that as I’m just concentrating on my rugby, but we’ll see how things go in the next couple of weeks.

“In the near future if we can keep the majority of our Welsh internationals in Wales playing in Wales I really think it’s only going to be a positive.”

Rhys Webb stands to lose from the new selection policy as he only has
