Landlord, 77, honoured for tackling pub robber

-

A 77-YEAR-OLD pub landlord has been rewarded for his bravery after he tackled a scissor-wielding robber to the ground and restrained him until police turned up.

Bruno Maiorano was counting the takings from The Packet pub in Cardiff Bay one night in June when Simeon Dunkley, 29, broke in and demanded money as he held scissors to the pensioner’s throat.

Dunkley had taken a coat from the pub and started stuffing the money into its pockets, but stooped to pick up a bag of coins.

Mr Maiorano managed to grab a chair and hit him over the head with it.

Dunkley tried to get away, but Mr Maiorano hit him again, and his wife and bar staff heard the commotion.

They all managed to disarm Dunkley and restrain him until the police arrived.

A month later he pleaded guilty to robbery and is now serving a sentence of four years and eight months.

Mr Maiorano, who has run the pub for the past 14 years, said: “I was not frightened. I was just very angry.”

Now Mr Maiorano and his wife, Caroline, have received an award at a ceremony organised by South Wales Police and attended by FA Wales manager Chris Coleman at Cardiff City Football Stadium. More than 60 officers, staff, and members of the public received awards for bravery, professionalism, investigative excellence and victim care.
