Auction held in memory of farmer, 19, raises £30k

-

AN auction held in the memory of a young farmer found dead after going missing has raised more than £30,000 for a search-and-rescue team.

An event to pay tribute to 19-year-old James Corfield has raised more than treble its goal in an auction attended by more than 800 people.

The talented cricketer’s body was found in July after he went missing from the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells.

The money raised from the auction will now be given to Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, who formed a key part in the search for the keen farmer.

The event, which saw 41 lots of items donated by the local community, was organised by a midWales estate agent whose staff formed part of the original search party looking for James.

Described as an “emotional evening” attended by family and friends, prizes included holidays, rugby tickets and vouchers from mid-Wales businesses.

Megan Hughes, letting assistant at Norman Lloyd Estate Agents, said: “James’ death affected us all in the office – between us we know a lot of his family.

“I was at the Royal Welsh when he went missing and went as part of the search party.

“We just wanted to do something to raise some money.”

The auction was held at Welshpool livestock market – a place James had regularly attended every Monday with his family and brother, Tom, who helped organise the night.

Despite an original target of £10,000, the total figure raised on October 27 is expected to increase with donations still coming in.
