Mak backs another great escape

CLAUDE Makelele has backed Swansea City to get out of trouble after making his shock decision to walk away from the Welsh club for a job in Belgium.

The 44-year-old has become head coach of KAS Eupen, who sit at the bottom of the Pro Jupiler League table.

He leaves with Swansea back in the Premier League relegation zone following the weekend defeat to Brighton, the fifth defeat in six home games this season.

Paul Clement brought Makelele – who he worked with at Chelsea and Paris St Germain – to South Wales shortly after his appointment as Swans boss in January.

The pair were part of a coaching team who helped the club retain Premier League status.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Swansea, especially helping the club secure its Premier League status last season,” said Makelele.

“I’d like to thank the owners, chairman and the manager for giving me the opportunity. It’s a wonderful football club; a real family club that’s been a pleasure to serve. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome and help I’ve received in Swansea from the backroom staff to the fans.”

Makelele also urged supporters to keep faith with their coach and players, despite their recent difficulties.

“Yes, things are difficult on the pitch at the moment, but I’d urge everyone to stay patient,” he added.

“I know Paul (Clement) will make a success of it. I think two wins will be enough to raise confidence and get things going again. The quality is there to get out of trouble, but it is very important the fans stick with the team.”

West Ham yesterday parted company with manager Slaven Bilic, with former Everton and Manchester United boss David Moyes set to take charge until the end of the season.
