Lillith the lynx still on the loose in Ceredigion

-

FARMERS are concerned that an escaped lynx could attack and kill livestock.

The Eurasian lynx, called Lillith, escaped from Borth Animalarium in Ceredigion sometime more than a week ago and is believed to still be in the locality.

Members of the public have been urged to keep away from the area, while animal handlers continue their seach for the big cat.

It has sharp teeth and claws and is capable of killing pets or farm animals, according to Dyfed Powys Police – who warned it may become aggressive if cornered or trapped. Their advice is to report any sightings but not to approach the animal.

Wyn Evans, chairman of the National Farmers Union (NFU) Cymru said: “Reports that a lynx has escaped captivity in Ceredigion will be of concern to our farming members.

“This news highlights NFU Cymru’s opposition to plans to reintroduce the lynx to the wild in various areas of the UK.

“NFU Cymru firmly maintains that these animals should only be kept in safe and secure environments where they cannot risk harm to livestock.”

Meanwhile, zoo owner Tracy Tweedy says they will now be setting baited traps to catch the female lynx – which she believes is still in the area.

She added: “The lynx was last seen eating last Tuesday but on Thursday people believed they saw her hiding in the bushes. She has hidden before.

“We thought she might be hiding or injured, but then it was clear that we couldn’t catch her.

“I’m pretty sure she’s still on our hill. Our hill is covered with rabbits, so she won’t attack sheep because she’s not starving.”
