Welsh Michelin-star restaurant on market for £575k
THERE are currently only seven restaurants in Wales with a Michelin star – and now one of those is up for sale.
The Checkers, in Montgomery, which is known for its French cuisine, has hit the market with a guide price of £575,000 for the freehold property.
Run by chef-proprietor Stéphane Borie, his partner Sarah and her sister Kathryn, the building itself is a Grade-II listed coaching inn, which became a culinary hotspot under the current owners.
It’s a popular destination restaurant which has been fully-refurbished and includes five letting rooms – with an extant planning consent for another – which, according to real estate service Colliers International, have contributed to net annual sales of £498,000.
Ed Jefferson, from Colliers International’s Hotels team, said the restaurant is ideally situated in the heart of a busy Powys tourist town.
“Overlooking the market place, The Checkers is an eye-catching building which underwent a complete refurbishment in 2011,” he said. “The Checkers has held a Michelin Star since 2011 thanks to the efforts of Michel Roux Jr-trained chef Stéphane.”
