SPRING LAMBS (1,178): An SQQ of 176p/kg was achieved, with lambs soaring to 196p/kg for a pen of 45kg lambs from HC Edwards & Sons, Maesgwyn. All weights in strong demand and with all firms firing and wanting lambs, a buoyant trade was seen throughout. The heavier lambs were probably best part of £10 better with a top price of £89/head achieved for a pen of 49kg from HR Jones, Glanyrafon. CULL EWES (297): The ewe trade seems to be getting stronger week after week and today was no exception. A super entry of ewes, and plenty more could have been sold. An excellent trade throughout, with ewes topping at £112/head for a pen from HC Edwards & Sons, Maesgwyn. All types in stronger demand.

FAT LAMBS (295): A far better entry than the previous week, but more lambs are definitely needed. Reaching a top of £87 were heavyweigh­ts from Wells, Glaneri. The overall average was at 168p/kg, an increase of 3p from the previous week. STORE LAMBS & CULL SHEEP (19): Stores reached £68.50 for 43.5k from Davies, Alltgoch; £66 for 41.5k from Phillips & Sons, Tredafydd Isaf, who also sold 36k at £60. Cull sheep peaked at £75.50 for a ram from Wells, Glaneri, who also sold other rams at £74.50, £73.50 and £72.50. STORE CATTLE & GRAZING COWS (35): A Hereford bull weighing 1,030k topped at £1,030 from James Partners, Penrallt Llyn Farm, who also sold a 1,000k Hereford bull at £990; £950 for an 850k Hereford cow

CULL SHEEP (60): The numbers of cull sheep have certainly reduced; this time last year there was an entry of just over 400 and the overall average was £15 up on yesterday’s overall average, which was £30/head. STORE LAMBS (1,121): An increased entry of lambs saw a better selection of short-term meated types forward, which topped at £74.50/head for Texel X ram lambs from Evans, Gorwel. The overall average was at £50/ head to include smaller types. This time last year there was an entry of 1,881 lambs which topped at £74/ head.

FINISHED LAMBS: 1,481 lambs with 40-48kg weights selling very well to nine different buyers, and averaging over 170p. 39-43.5kg to very strong demand peaking at 189p/kg (£74.80-39.5kg) from TJ Forward. Heavier weights to 176p/kg (£80.80-46kg) from BJ & LI Jenkins. Standard weights to 175p/kg (£63.80-36.4kg) from GJ Owen & Co. Lightweigh­ts to 167p/kg (£45.50-27.3kg) & (£53-31.7kg) both from PJ & S Edwards, with very light & Welsh still difficult to sell. CULL SHEEP: 482 cull sheep sold to a comparable trade to the previous week. Powerful ewes from GW & J Hoggins sold to £105 for Charollais and £103 for Suffolks. Several bunches £90-plus, the stronger end £80-plus. Mules to £77 for WN Waters and £74 from J Ford. Best Welsh to £62.50 from CT & GT Williams, and £55 from JJ Greenow & Sons. There would be a greater proportion of Welsh ewes in excess of £40. Very small or plain from £25 down to £5. Not too much strength in the ram section, the best to £89 from TJ Forward. Welsh to £71 from TG & JG Davies & Sons, and £70 from Mrs HL Hudd. STORE LAMBS/BREEDING SHEEP: 414 store lambs sold to strong competitio­n on all types. Several pens of ewe lambs on offer. Nelson-type Welsh lambs to £60 from RD Roberts. Texel X Welsh ewe lambs to £58 from EJ Hart & Co. Aberfield ewe lambs to £59 from DRP & D Morgan, smaller Welsh/Cheviot ewe lambs to £53. Feeding lambs to £57.50 from J Binns. Small but wellbred lambs generally £45-£55, very small or backward lambs between £15-£30. Only a few breeding rams on offer, D & OA Prince sold a four-year-old Texel to £205. REARING CALVES: A much-reduced entry of just 39 young calves met a very strong trade on the best. Blue bulls to £390 twice for JM & BS Jones and RE Lewis & Son, with others £375 & £350. This however, was overshadow­ed by two Blue heifers from Price & Co Farming Ltd, which after competitio­n were sold at £440 & £430, while a 17-day-old Blue from AR Edwards & Son notched up £360. BREEDING CATTLE: A good entry of breeding cattle today to a top of £1,460 for a Lim cow (31m) & her Lim heifer calf (4m) from L West. FEEDING BULLS: Just four forward to a top of £770 for a Lim (14m) from GS Watkins, with others at £690 from RD Walters (Char, 14m). STIRKS/YOUNG STORES: Another quality entry of young stores, with the best sorts a flying trade. A super run from Miss SM Price, Llantrisan­t, sold to £990 for an eight-month Charolais steer with others at £870 & £860 (6m) from DG Guy, Kenfig Hill, who also sold Charolais steers (6-8m) at £815. STORE CATTLE: A smaller entry of 189 store cattle forward, selling to a faster trade on all sorts except the Hereford-sired cattle, which were still hard to place. The well-bred types would be £50-£80 per head up on the week, with more customers in attendance. Feeding steers a flying trade and sold to £1,500 (760kg-27m) for Simmental crosses from BH Jones, Newton. CULL CATTLE: 36 culls to another very strong trade on all grades. Grade 1 Beef again averaging over £1,000, and selling to a top of £1,135 for a Limousin from TD Llewellyn & Son, who also sold Lims at £970 & £950.
