Take a tour of one of Wales’ leaders in A-level education

-

KINGS Monkton School in Cardiff, one of the UK’s fastest-growing independent schools, opens its doors to prospective sixth formers this month for a series of bespoke tours and conversations with subject leaders.

On November 23, principal, Paul Norton and head of sixth form Sean Hughes will host pupils and parents at Kings Monkton, taking them on a tour of the school and its state-ofthe-art sixth form facility.

Prospective pupils will be able to discuss their subject interests with teachers on a one-to-one basis, while parents can speak with the principal and sixth-form team and experience first-hand how Kings Monkton has grown to become one of Wales’ leaders in A-level education.

Kings Monkton opened its state-of-the-art sixth form facility earlier this year, following an exceptional report from education governing body, Estyn.

Its first cohort of pupils experienced immense A-level success this summer, with 88% of pupils achieving a pass rate of A*-B, far surpassing the national average.

Pupils have engaged with Kings Monkton’s pioneering co-curriculum, inspired by the world-renowned International Baccalaureate, incorporating four distinct learning pathways of business and law, education and humanities, natural sciences, and the creative arts.

The curriculum is designed to thoroughly prepare students for university and careers in a variety of fields, and this year saw pupil Karan Mann, then Year 13, progress to study medicine at Keele University with straight A*s and A grades.

Dan Harding, another Kings Monkton graduate, is now taking a gap year to undertake charity work for Project Trust, where he is supporting local communities in Cambodia, before commencing studying economics at university next year.

Kings Monkton’s sixth form pupils are able to choose from an extensive range of intellectually-challenging A-level subjects, including global perspectives, criminology, applied medical sciences and performing arts.

Pupils also partake in extensive co-curricular activities as part of their course, and this year, co-curricular student leaders visited the Senedd as part of their global perspectives study.

The school has also seen pupils Angharad and Freyja, Year 12, develop their interest in engineering while visiting Swansea University as part of the Project Headstart programme.

Principal Norton said: “Kings Monkton is a school steeped in history with a progressive outlook. We are passionate about providing a modern, expert-led curriculum incorporating innovative teaching methods.

“The new sixth form building is just another forward step in our mission to continually provide world-leading facilities here at Kings Monkton, and we’ve already seen students prosper after graduating from the co-curriculum.”
