PREVIEW: MUDBOUND (15)

DIRECTOR Dee Rees’ period drama, adapted from the debut novel by Hillary Jordan, contrasts the bruising experiences of two Mississippi families – one black, the other white – in the aftermath of the Second World War.

Henry McAllan (Jason Clarke) transplants his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan), their two children and his grandfather (Jonathan Banks) from Memphis to the Mississippi Delta to pursue grand dreams of farming the land. Part of the property is leased to Hap Jackson (Rob Morgan) and his wife Florence (Mary J. Blige), whose family has shed blood, sweat and tears into the sun-baked soil.

The fates of these two emotionally wounded clans become inextricably entwined when Henry’s brother Jamie (Garrett Hedlund) and Hap’s eldest son Ronsel (Jason Mitchell) return from the battlefield, bearing deep psychological scars.

Available simultaneously to stream on Netflix.

PADDINGTON 2 (PG)

PADDINGTON (voiced by Ben Whishaw) is happily installed in the attic of 32 Windsor Gardens, family home of insurance assessor Henry Brown (Hugh Bonneville), his wife Mary (Sally Hawkins) and their children, Judy (Madeleine Harris) and Jonathan (Samuel Joslin).

On a visit to an antiques dealer, Paddington unearths an old “popping book” of London, which would make the perfect present for Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton), but the rare tome is expensive. Unperturbed, Paddington cleans windows and works in a barber shop to meet the price tag.

Hilariously vain, fading actor Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) steals the rare edition and Paddington is wrongly sentenced to 10 years in prison, so the Browns vow to clear his name.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT (15)

EXUBERANT portrait of families living hand-to-mouth in the shadow of the fairy tale sparkle of Walt Disney World.

Single mother Halley (Bria Vinaite) sells designer fragrances to wealthy theme park visitors, aided by her precocious six-year-old daughter Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), in order to pay for a single room at the Magic Castle Motel.

During the day, little Moonee goes on adventures with other Magic Castle kids including Scooty (Christopher Rivera) and Dicky (Aiden Malik).

Their escapades result in a blaze at an abandoned development across the highway and when Halley’s neighbour Ashley learns that her boy Scooty was involved in arson, she forbids him from socialising with Moonee. The two mothers come to blows and an increasingly volatile Halley resorts to desperate measures to keep her dysfunctional family together.
