I was driving at ‘normal’ speed, crash-death accused tells court

-

A young driver accused of causing a mother of two’s death while racing an Audi told police he was driving “normally”, a court heard.

Joseph Fettah, 20, denies causing Jenna Miller’s death by driving dangerously in Cardiff Road, Barry, last year and is on trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

When police put a witness statement to him suggesting he was driving at 60mph he replied: “I would not say it was anything like that at all.”

The incident occurred near the Texaco garage on the A4055 just after 9pm on September 27, 2016.

Ms Miller was 30 when she died as a result of injuries she suffered.

Jamie Oaten, 24, from Barry, who was driving an Audi A5 at the time, pleaded guilty to causing her death by dangerous driving.

The defendant told officers he first saw the Audi at traffic-lights in Cardiff Road, adding he drove off “normally” when the lights changed to green.

Fettah told police he was driving between 30mph and 40mph and the gap between him and the car in front increased.

The defendant stated he saw a car coming out of the garage, which looked like it had stopped in the road, and saw the Audi’s brake lights come on. He added: “It all just happened. It [the Audi] hit it [the Mazda] from the side.”

The trial continues.
